How To Make A Succesful Small Business Website In 2026

Contents

For a successful small business website in 2026, you must be present and relevant. You cannot outsource everything to AI. You should be creating regular content and finding ways to engage with your users away from your website. Even if you achieve success, you must never stop strategising and seeking ways to stay ahead of your competition.

You still need at least one human involved.

Many people believe humans are obsolete. If AI can do everything we can, why bother competing? When you take a step back, the people who say this either sell AI or listen to too many podcasts to ever engage with the real world. Whilst it is a valuable tool, AI is not yet all-powerful. In my corner of the universe, humans still have the greatest effect on their business success, not AI.

For most of my clients, AI is only just becoming part of their everyday workflows. It is not yet running their businesses for them. So for now, you still need to be involved in managing and growing your website.

I’m not saying AI is not helpful. As a strategic partner, it offers great insights for relatively low costs. It can provide clear, actionable steps to help grow your website. Despite this, I still highly recommend using your own human discernment to decide what steps you take.

Now we are clear that you still need to be involved. What is it you need to do to make your website successful?

Regular content creation is required.

It is no secret that we need to create some kind of “valuable” content to thrive in 2026’s digital landscape. Whether we make reels for Instagram, post on LinkedIn, or write blogs on our website, we must consistently “show up” to stay relevant. Everyone knows this. The issue is how to stand out in the crowd.

When ChatGPT came out, everyone thought they had a secret weapon. The world’s greatest (and cheapest) copywriter. Even now, I meet business owners who use ChatGPT to write all their content. If that’s you, STOP! Maybe it’s just me, but AI-generated content is easy to spot. Wherever it is you’re trying to grow, personalised content will always beat AI slop.

In SEO, my area of expertise, we prioritise using the EEAT (Expertise, Experience, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness) framework for writing successful content. It’s a guide to create personal, human content. It ensures the wisdom enclosed in your content comes from real-world experience that AI can’t replicate (yet). It is how you separate yourself from those who fill their websites with ChatGPT-generated content.

The question now is, if you’re producing regular content and attracting visitors to your website, how does that help your business?

User engagement is how you level up.

Once you get users on your website, it’s time to start converting them to customers. Some people might buy instantly, but most are just shopping around. It’s those people you need to engage with and keep coming back.

There are a few ways to do this. They all require transcending your website and becoming present in people’s lives. That’s how you ensure you’re front of mind when your users seek what you’re selling. Newsletters, downloadable tools, and online community spaces are all ways to become a greater part of your users’ lives.

Once you are ahead of your competition and winning more business through your website, how do you stay ahead in this ever-changing landscape?

Never stop moving.

There is a quote from Pumping Iron that says, “the wolf on the hill is not as hungry as the wolf climbing the hill”. Arnold Schwarzenegger references aside, the principle stands that you need to constantly strategise, optimise, and grow your website to stay ahead.

Anyone who has done SEO, social media, or even AEO for a long time knows: the algorithms constantly change, and you must change with them to stay in the game. There is always someone to take your place. If you manage to get ahead, it’s hard work to stay there. Despite this, the principles outlined in this article will remain the same for years to come. We must play an active role in our business for it to grow and be successful. We need to build trust with potential customers and become their go-to solution. And finally, we must constantly adapt to our environment to outpace our competition.
